Occasionally we had to play real Air Force. The base commander instigated room inspections once a month for different units. The flight people were scheduled based on who was working swing shift on Saturday. When Able Flight's turn came, we were of course very excited for the opportunity to show the Flight Commander and his staff what great housekeepers we were. The Flight Commander for one of these inspections was the lovable and always jovial Lt. Block. Mr. Spit Shine and by-the-book. JP Jones and I were roomies and we put all of our long forgotten tricks together to make the room look every bit the military model. We even rolled our underwear for the occasion! However we also maintained our sense of humor. At the appointed time, Lt. Block and the senior NCOs came in and took a look inside our lockers, under the beds, and thru the windows. Everything looked in order until they came to our table. On it we had placed a little Mickey Mouse statue with a note saying: “Welcome to our room Lt. Block and team!” I have to say, the Lt got a smile out of it. The senior NCO looked at us like we were some kind of nuts. The junior NCO just shook his head and followed the parade to the next room. Later, Lt. Block did tell me that he thought that was pretty “cute” – he wasn’t smiling but the point was well taken.
